Grief is an inevitable part of life and can cause sighs too deep for words. We have choices: we can fight it, we can run from it, we can deny it. We fight grief or run and hide from grief at our own peril. Avoided grief can lead us into a quagmire of resentments, anger, rage, depression, self pity, dis-ease, physical, emotional and even spiritual breakdown or malaise.

We have another choice. Grief can be an enormous opportunity for growth if we invite it over for tea and conversation. When we welcome grief into our lives, something quite miraculous happens.

Through the miracle of spiritual alchemy, the hard time of grief becomes transfigured into something quite beautiful within us. The ragged edges of rage become the serenity of forbearance, the flagellation of guilt and shame becomes soothing forgiveness, the dis-ease of depression becomes “a thing with feathers” namely hope and so on.
